For the 2023 International Society of Typographic Designers Student Assessment Scheme, I was challenged to create a radical reimagining of the opening and closing chapters of a chosen book through typographic interpretation. The novel which
I chose to reimagine was Oscar Wilde's, The Picture of Dorian Gray, published in 1890.
I recreated such chapters taking into consideration all elements of book and design and making use of typographic elements such as typesetting, typographic detailing, hierarchy, paper stock and engineering, and binding.
The format of the final boom is inspired by the traditional size standard size of a 19th century canvas with a 4:5 ratio. The book was french folded and subsequently perfect bound due to the paper engineering method of stitching and burning, which emphasised impactful quotes and atmosphere of the psychological gothic novel.
